Temperature-controlled fulfilment: when FBA is not enough
Meltables, actives and cold-chain realities: how to keep temperature-sensitive healthcare products sellable all year.
On this page
Standard FBA is a superb machine with one blind spot: it does not promise your product a temperature. For most goods that never matters. For gummies in July, probiotics in a heatwave trailer, and actives with stability windows, it decides whether the customer receives the product you manufactured or a degraded cousin of it wearing your label.
Know your product’s real exposure
Start from stability data, not vibes: what temperature range does the product tolerate, for how long? Then map the journey’s hot spots: parked trailers, dock queues, un-conditioned storage, and the last-mile van in summer. Formal meltable classification (which brings seasonal FBA acceptance windows and removal risk) is Amazon’s blunt version of this analysis; your own version should be sharper, because plenty of products degrade quietly without ever being classed meltable.
The options, honestly compared
- Seasonal FBA: sell through FBA in cooler months, switch away in summer. Cheap, but demands calendar discipline and a summer alternative that protects the Prime experience.
- FBM from conditioned space: your own or a partner’s temperature-controlled warehouse, shipping direct. Full control of storage; the delivery leg still needs thought (speed, and packaging that buys hours).
- Specialist fulfilment partner: pharma-grade, temperature-mapped storage with marketplace-speed dispatch, running FBM year-round or feeding FBA in the safe season. The usual answer for regulated brands at scale.
- Product engineering: reformulation, coatings or packaging that widen the tolerance window. Slowest option, permanent payoff.
Packaging buys hours, not weeks
Insulated liners and phase-change packs protect a parcel for the delivery leg, and that is their honest job: bridging the last day, not excusing weeks of hot storage. Use them to extend a well-designed cold-ish chain to the doorstep, and test them in the vehicle conditions of an actual July, not a laboratory.
Run the calendar like an operator
Temperature strategy is seasonal choreography: FBA stock drawn down before the risk window, summer capacity booked in conditioned space, listings switched between fulfilment methods without losing the Buy Box or the badge, and autumn re-entry planned against check-in queues. Put the switch dates in the trading calendar with named owners; improvised summers are how melt reviews happen.
Watch the signals
Complaints mentioning melting, clumping or texture; return reasons; review language in hot weeks; and lot-level quality checks on returns all tell you whether the chain is holding. One melted-product photo in a review outlives a season of savings on ambient storage.
