Q4 and peak planning for healthcare brands

When retail’s biggest quarter collides with cough and cold season: the calendar, the capacity game and the plan that survives both.

On this page

For most categories Q4 is one peak. Healthcare gets two at once: the retail events everyone plans for, and the winter illness season nobody schedules. They collide in the same weeks, inside an Amazon network that is tightening capacity exactly when you need more of it. Surviving that collision is a planning exercise that starts in summer.

Understand what tightens

From early autumn, FBA capacity limits shrink as every seller inbounds at once, storage moves to peak pricing, and check-in stretches from days to weeks. Your allowance reflects your recent sales and inventory scores, not your ambitions, which is why the IPI housekeeping of August decides the shelf space of November.

Two demand curves, one plan

Plan the retail curve, events, gifting-adjacent products, promotional spikes, from your own history and this year’s event calendar. Plan the illness curve differently: cough, cold, flu and immunity demand follows the season, arrives with weather rather than with marketing, and can surge weeks early or late. History gives the shape; humility gives the buffer. Hero winter SKUs deserve deeper cover than the spreadsheet strictly justifies, because the cost of missing the season dwarfs the storage premium.

The autumn positioning play

  • Position peak stock from early autumn, before check-in queues form; late senders queue behind the entire marketplace.
  • Hold overflow in your own or a partner’s warehouse for rapid weekly top-ups instead of one giant send.
  • Mind expiry maths on winter stock: a season’s worth of dated goods sent early spends shelf life; balance send size against dates.
  • Keep an FBM offer live behind FBA on hero lines: when FBA stock gaps mid-peak, your own dispatch holds the listing and the rank.

Trade the quarter, do not just watch it

In-season, the rhythm is weekly at minimum: capacity and restock limits, days of cover per hero SKU against actual velocity, check-in status of inbound, and the illness signal (search interest, category movement) that says the wave is early. Pre-agree the responses: which SKUs get the next top-up when space is scarce, when to slow advertising because stock cannot support it, and when to raise the flag that says divert everything to the winter heroes.

January is part of the plan

Peak ends twice: the retail cliff at Christmas and the slow illness tail through late winter. Plan the stock landing zone so you exit with weeks of cover, not months: post-peak storage surcharges and springtime expiry write-offs are the receipts of an over-enthusiastic November. A good Q4 plan is judged in February.
