Brand Registry is the foundation of everything a brand controls on Amazon: content authority, A+ pages, Brand Stores, brand analytics and the enforcement tools. Setting it up is not difficult, but setting it up wrongly, in the wrong name, with the wrong permissions, creates problems that surface at the worst moments. This is the setup done properly.

Before you start: the trademark

Registry runs on trademarks. You need a registered (or in some programmes pending) text or image mark, in the markets where you want protection, and the enrolment must be made by the trademark owner or someone the owner explicitly authorises. Check the practical details before applying: the mark on file should match how the brand actually appears on your products, and the goods classification should cover what you sell. If your trademarks live with a parent company or licensor, agree who enrols before anyone does.

The one mistake you cannot easily undo

Never let an agency, distributor or reseller enrol your brand under their own account. Whoever enrols becomes the brand’s administrator inside Amazon, with the power to grant and withhold everything else. Untangling a registry held by a former partner is slow, painful and sometimes contractual. The brand owner enrols; partners are invited with defined roles. No exceptions, however helpful the partner is being.

Enrolment itself

The application asks for the trademark details, the categories you sell in, and evidence connecting you to the brand: images of products and packaging carrying the mark, and information about your manufacturing and distribution. Amazon verifies the application against the trademark office record and typically contacts the trademark’s named correspondent to confirm the applicant is legitimate, so warn your trademark attorney a code is coming. Clean applications complete quickly; mismatched details are what cause the long tail.

After approval: roles and permissions

Registry distinguishes between administrators, who control the brand’s presence, and users with specific rights such as registering products or submitting violation reports. Map these deliberately: internal ownership of the administrator role, named individuals rather than shared logins, and partners scoped to what their work requires. Review the list quarterly, and treat leavers and agency changes as revocation events, the same way you would treat them for your bank.

Switch on what Registry unlocks

  • Content authority: claim your listings so your content wins edit disputes against resellers.
  • A+ content and the Brand Store: the conversion layer, live from day one.
  • Report a Violation: the structured enforcement route; accurate, evidenced reports build a track record that accelerates future cases.
  • Brand analytics: search behaviour and customer data unavailable to non-registered sellers.
  • Automated protections: Amazon’s machine-driven takedowns improve once a verified brand feeds them data.

What to layer on next

Registry is the passport, not the bodyguard. Once it is live, serious brands add Transparency serialisation for unit-level counterfeit blocking, pursue Project Zero for self-service removal once their complaint record earns it, and build monitoring so catalogue changes and new sellers surface within hours. Each of these assumes a clean registry underneath, which is why the setup order matters.
