Amazon SEO: how ranking actually works
Indexing, relevance and performance: the three-layer model that explains every rank you have, and how to move each layer.
On this page
Amazon SEO attracts more mythology than any other marketplace topic, mostly because people import web-SEO instincts into a system with different physics. Amazon’s ranking question is commercial: which product, shown for this search, is most likely to produce a purchase? Answer that and the layers fall into place.
Layer one: indexing, the entry ticket
Before ranking comes eligibility: is your product in the candidate set for a search at all? Indexing is driven by the words on the listing, title, bullets, structured attributes and backend search terms, and by category placement. The audit is simple and skipped everywhere: search your target phrases and confirm the product appears anywhere at all. If it does not, no amount of optimisation moves an unindexed listing; add the vocabulary (compliantly) and re-check.
Layer two: relevance, the match
Among indexed candidates, Amazon weighs how well the listing matches the search’s intent: term placement (titles carry more weight than backend fields), attribute completeness that satisfies filters, and the accumulated evidence of what shoppers who typed that phrase went on to buy. This is why chasing vocabulary you cannot convert is self-defeating: relevance is partly earned behaviourally, not just declared textually.
Layer three: performance, the decider
Between relevant candidates, performance wins: sales velocity on the term, conversion rate, price competitiveness, availability and delivery speed, review quality and recency. This layer explains the flywheel, sales beget rank begets sales, and the launch problem, no history means no performance evidence. It is also why a stock-out is an SEO event: velocity stops, the evidence decays, and the position you rebuilt costs money twice.
What actually moves rank, in order
- Conversion improvements on the listing: imagery, price position, review base. The highest-leverage work.
- Availability and delivery speed: unbroken stock and the badge, boring and decisive.
- Deliberate velocity: advertising and promotion aimed at the terms where rank is winnable and valuable.
- Vocabulary completeness: indexed for every phrase you deserve, in claims-safe language.
- Time: rank compounds; the calendar is part of the algorithm.
Measure it like a portfolio
Track a defined set of target terms weekly: rank, whether movement came with advertising or without it, and conversion on the traffic each term sends. The pattern to build is rising organic rank with falling paid dependence, term by term. That is Amazon SEO working, and it is indistinguishable from simply running the product well, which is the whole point.
