Trademark, copyright or patent: which IP complaint fits?

Amazon gives brand owners three different weapons, and most reach for the wrong one.

Three bites: operator detail1 min readAll Protect bites

Amazon’s violation reporting splits intellectual property into three routes. Trademark covers misuse of your brand name or logo, and counterfeit is its most serious form. Copyright covers stolen creative: your photography, A+ content or copy lifted onto someone else’s listing. Patent covers infringement of a registered design or invention, and moves slowest because the assessment is hardest.

Enforcement quality depends on matching the harm to the route. A counterfeit reported as a copyright issue drags; a lifted image reported as counterfeit gets rejected. Precise complaints with clear evidence build a track record that makes your future reports faster.

Accuracy is also a survival matter. Amazon tracks complaint accuracy, and brands that fire speculative or competitive complaints lose reporting privileges, which is an expensive thing to explain to the board.

Reading about it is the slow way.
