ACoS and TACoS: which number actually matters?

Two acronyms, one letter apart, telling completely different stories about the same account.

Two bites: how it works1 min readAll Grow bites

ACoS, advertising cost of sale, is ad spend divided by the sales those ads directly produced. It measures campaign efficiency: an ACoS of 20 per cent means the attributed sale cost a fifth of its value in advertising. TACoS, total advertising cost of sale, divides the same spend by all sales, organic included.

The distinction is strategic. TACoS shows whether advertising is building organic momentum or merely propping the business up: a falling TACoS with steady ACoS means ads are lifting rank and organic sales are compounding. That is the healthy pattern.

It also explains a classic mistake: cutting spend to make ACoS prettier can shrink total sales, because the velocity that fed organic rank goes with it. During launches and category pushes, a deliberately high ACoS on new-to-brand customers is often the correct spend.

Reading about it is the slow way.
